What is the NIT Act ?

National Institutes Of Technology (NITs) are federally funded technical universities in India, with a campus in each major Indian state. This Act declares them as institutions of national importance, along the lines of the IITs and makes them eligible for a larger amount of funding and support from the Indian Government. The Act also aimed at unifying the organisational structure of the NITs and bringing them under the direct purview of the Ministry of Human Resource Department. These institutions which were previously governed by individual societies.

    Benefit to the NITs

With the NIT Act, the societies governing the NITs cease to exist and the institutes are placed directly under the administrative control of the HRD ministry with the boards of governors heading affairs. The chairperson of the board is appointed by the President of India, who will also be a visitor to each institute. The ministry will also have a say in the appointment of the Director and Deputy Director of each institute.
The NITs have become a group of disciplined institutions and within few years, they have come a long way, based on the successful and sound foundation of REC system and with the elimination of dual control by state and central government. They have united together and successfully lobbied for INI status under NIT Act of 2007. With the new-found INI status, NITs shall be able to receive increased govt. funding and support, more freedom to implement various academic programs and increased attention nationally and internationally.
NITs further plan to start NITNET for networking and implement NIT-Vision 2025 to launch ambitious academic and research programs. Individual institutes will be permitted to start new programs catering to the needs of the local industry and wind up unpopular courses. The focus will be on nanotechnology and biotechnology. Plans are afoot to start integrated courses in science and technology along with dual degree programs both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
NITs have been told to increase the student intake in the next five years, with the number of students being doubled to that of the existing strength. The MHRD Ministry plans to increase the number of research fellowship, with as many as 60 to 70 being granted to each institute to enable students to concentrate on new topics of interest. Existing laboratories and libraries will also be upgraded.

    8. Power System Operation & Control (PSOC)
    9. Power Electronics (Machine Drives)
    10. Power Systems
    11. High Voltage Engineering (Only IISC)

Premier Institutes, in the order of preference

    1. IISc, Bangalore
    2. IIT, Bombay / Kanpur / Madras / Delhi / Kharagpur / Roorkee / Gowhati
    3. IIIT, Hyderabad ( www.iiit.ac.in/pgadmin.html)
    4. NITIE ( Mumbai) : PGD in Management
    5. NITs : Warangal / Suratkal / Tirichy / Calicut etc…..
    6. BHU, BITs, Pilani, Anna University, PSG, Coimbatore, Anna University, etc…
    7. Other University Colleges……
    Selection Criteria:
The selection is, generally, based on GATE percentile/rank. However, some IITs, NITs and other university colleges may conduct a written test / Interview for selection into M.Tech. In such a case, the GATE score is given 70% weightage and remaining 30% weightage is for the written test / Interview. The exact procedure will be known by referring to the information brochure issued by the colleges for admission into M.Tech. The selection criteria may vary from year to year and from college to college.
    * In IISc Bangalore, IIT Madras, Kharagpur,Roorkee, the selection is purely based on GATE score.
However in other colleges apart from GATE score, a written test or interview is being conducted for selection into M.Tech.
In IIIT, Hyderabad, the selection is based on written test and interview.

    NOTE:
    * If a student scores more than 98 percentile, there is a chance of getting into IITs.
    * If the GATE percentile is from 94 to 98 , the students can try for those IITs where there                  is written test or interview for selection into M.Tech and also apply for NITs and MS   program in IIT / IISc/
    * Those who have got less than 94 percentile they can apply for NITs and other colleges or MS program in IIT / IISc

    Non Stipend M.Tech:
Most of the IITs, NITs & other colleges have certain seats reserved in the Non-stipend category. Here, the UGC scholarship will not be given. All the expenses shall be borne by the students only. Those students who are economically sound and desperate to join IITs, can apply . Students, even with low GATE score can get good specializations.

    MS Programme:

    • Offered by most of the IITs and IISc. The MS course is equivalent to M.Tech. It involves research work and takes about of 21/2 to 3yrs to complete the course. Very few seats are available in the IITs. Admission are taken twice in a year (in June & Nov. months). Admission are based on GATE score + Degree marks + interview. Candidates with more than 90 percentile GATE score and good academic record
( > 70 % marks) have chances of getting admission.

Special attention for SC/ST students :
We strongly suggest you to apply for premier institutes like IIT’s irrespective of your percentiles. Luck may favour you.

    Special attention for Girls:
Certain universities have girls reservation,eg. Andhra Pradesh. Hence even at lower percentiles compared to boys, girls have fair chances.

Special note for Second Class students:
If you see the rules & regulations of various premier Institutes, 1st class in Engineering is the pre-requisite. If you apply online, your application will be rejected. Hence we suggest you to apply manually with a request letter stating your present strengths substantiating with GATE Score and your desire to do M.Tech in the respective IIT. Request them to give you a chance so that you can prove yourself. Most of the professors would like to encourage the students who are seriously interested, inspite of the above –ve point, if the GATE score is good and the student has a burning desire to join the desired specialization in the desired IIT. They may consider your application with sympathy and may give you a chance after a personnel Interview. some of our old students with second class in their graduation got admission on similar grounds. Be bold and be positive. Definitely, you can reach your goal.
    Note:
    1. Those who have got relatively low scores in the GATE are strongly advised to apply for more number of colleges (not less than 10) so that they can get admission in atleast one college in the desired specialization.
    1. The students are advised to select the first preference carefully, appropriate to their GATE score level as the students are called for interview based on their 1st preference opted., generally.
    1. The students shall be in-touch with the daily English newspapers ( The Hindu, The Indian Express, The Times of India etc.) and Employment News for the M.Tech notifications by various colleges.
    1. Presently there is a software boom and good campus placements. Hence some of the top rankers may not opt for M.Tech, hence the cut – offs in various primary institutes may slide down this year compared to previous year.
    1. All the above guidelines are only suggestive / advisory. The candidates are requested to go through the information brochure of each college and take decision appropriately. Depending upon their interest.
        6. The students may also contact their seniors/friends studying in various colleges for
their suggestions and latest information about the colleges.

    WISH U ALL THE BEST
